What we do

Our programs

Our ultimate goal is to ensure that women and communities are empowered to respond to this disease with hope rather than fear, education rather than misinformation, and treatment rather than denial.

Our approach

Three programs, one mission

Stigma, barriers to care and lack of education needlessly kill thousands of women every year. Our programs tackle each of these.

  • BCI Walk for the Cure crowd with a “Not all lumps are cancerous” sign
    Outreach & education

    Community Outreach

Early detection saves lives — but for many women in Ghana the chances of survival are much lower simply because breast cancer is not detected until it is too late. Remote villages make screening hard to access, and stigma, shame and denial keep women silent. BCI organizes community outreach events in deprived communities to educate, change attitudes and promote early detection, offering breast cancer screenings free of charge. Each year we hold Ghana’s Walk for the Cure, which has grown into one of Africa’s largest breast cancer awareness events.

  • Hands-on breast-model training for nurses
    Training & counselling

    Training & Peer Counseling

Ghana lacks a specialized oncology training program, so nursing students often have no access to basic breast-care knowledge, and there is a shortage of counsellors for newly diagnosed patients. BCI trains nurses across Ghana to educate their communities on early detection, self-examination and referral, and runs a peer-counselling program that equips breast cancer survivors to guide patients, connect them with local resources and provide emotional support.

  • BCI and Direct Relief essential-medicines handover at Peace and Love Hospital
    Treatment & sponsorship

    Medical Sponsorship

BCI provides medical sponsorship to those in dire need of drugs and treatment. Partnering with Direct Relief, we supply essential medical resources free of charge to health facilities in Ghana, and sponsor treatment for breast cancer patients at Peace and Love Hospital, Kumasi, who cannot afford care.

More initiatives

More of our work across Ghana

  • Oncology training for community-based nurses

Through the National Basic Oncology Training Program for Community-Based Nurses, BCI equips general nurses — in both theory and practice — in the modern management of breast and other cancers, so they can educate their communities on prevention, self-detection, the importance of early detection, and how and when to refer suspected cases.

  • Peer / nurse navigators

BCI provides peer/nurse navigation training to survivors and nurses, equipping them with the tools to guide newly diagnosed patients to quality care, connect them with local resources, encourage them to complete treatment, and offer psychosocial support (HOPE).

  • Community breast-health promoters

Responding to low awareness of breast cancer among Ghanaians, BCI trains volunteers — including ministers’ spouses — as community breast-health promoters who return to their communities to create awareness and refer suspected cases to treatment centres.

  • Donation of essential medicines

BCI and partner Direct Relief work together to address humanitarian needs in Ghana through essential medical resources, providing these medicines to health facilities free of charge for needy patients.

BCI Ghana Walk for the Cure

Our nationwide flagship campaign makes the fight against cancer public, celebrating survivors and reducing stigma. First held in Kumasi in 2011 and now an annual feature in regions and districts across Ghana, the Walk has recorded over 296,000 people in attendance.
